Cannot Afford to Hire a Pro to Waterproof Your Roof?
If your roof has seen better days, and you are wondering if roof waterproofing will give you a few more years, then read the following post, provided by Bay Ridge Roofing.
What is Waterproofing?
Waterproofing is adding a liquid-applied waterproofed membrane to a roof’s surface. It will protect your roof and increase its longevity. This will also reduce the roof’s temperature when exposed to direct heat from the sun. After which, when it rains, shinglesare at their weakest, and more susceptible to breakage, water seepage, and even mold growth.
One of the biggest benefits of roof waterproofing is it protects your roof from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Without this, your roof will crack from the sun’s heat. Luckily, you can do something about this. The following DIY waterproofing tips may give you a better chance at slowing the progression of your roof’s degradation.
Fluid-Applied Roofing System
Replace your roof’s material if needed. However, if the expense is a concern, consider using fluid-applied roofing. Many flat roofs that have been around for a few decades will have a bitumen roofing membrane applied. This is also referred to as ethylene propylene diene terpolymeror EPDM for short. These types of roofs are good candidates for liquid waterproofing solutions.
Checking The Roof and Material Compatibility
The liquid product and your existing roof have to be compatible. Otherwise, you will end up losing your monetary investment. For example, an acrylic elastomeric-coated roof and a urethane liquid coat are not compatible, as the acrylic will soften and mix with the urethane.
Another compatible waterproof material to consider is silicone. Roofs that have silicone surfaces will require silicone coating. No other type of coating will stick to a silicone roof surface except, of course, silicone. The benefit of silicone is it resists pondingand will help to prevent water damage. The biggest drawback is once you use silicone, you cannot use any other material ever.
